Bangin’ Kitchen Sink Smoothie

I just spent an AMAZING 5 days in San Jose, California. Now, I know what you’re thinking, sure, who wouldn’t spend an amazing time anywhere in sunny California, especially when it’s still snowing over most of the country.

No, this was not a vacation at all. I spent 4 days at the Tony Robbins Unleash the Power Within event at the SAP Center with 12,000 of my now closest friends. If you’ve ever been to a Tony Robbins event, you’ll understand my comment about all of the amazing people I met.

What does all this have to do with my Bangin’ Kitchen Sink Smoothie? Funny you should ask.

During these 4 intense days, I did not eat much at all. AT ALL! I tried my best to drink water, I packed a few nuts and seeds in my bag and a few protein bars. But, the SAP Center is an indoor arena whose primary tenant is the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. So, the food vendors there are a bit less than healthy. You can eat all the hot dogs, nachos and French fries you want but as you know, that’s just not my style. So, I came home completely depleted. Over-stimulated, and under fed does not make for a happy Linda!

This Bangin’ Kitchen Sink Smoothie; I got the recipe from Mark Sisson, was exactly what I needed this morning!

Bangin’ Kitchen Sink Smoothie

This smoothie is inspired by the smoothie that renowned triathlete and coach Ben Greenfield says is one of his go-to breakfasts. I call it the kitchen sink smoothie because I throw everything but the kitchen sink in there! Feel free to adapt this recipe to include any nuts and herbs you have around. This is a calorie and nutrient-dense meal in itself, so you might even choose to split it into two servings or share it with someone you love.

INGREDIENTS

3 C Kale leaves

½ C full-fat coconut milk

½ medium avocado

¼ C raw almonds

3 Brazil nuts – YUM!! These are my Mom’s favorite nut

½ C loosely packed fresh herbs – see NOTE

2 scoops of your favorite meal replacement powder – I use Primal Fuel in Vanilla, but if you use Chocolate than add

1 T cocoa powder

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp Himalayan sea salt

2-3 drips peppermint extract (optional)

2 ice cubes

 

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place a steamer basket in a small pan with an inch or so of water in the bottom. Bring the water to a boil and steam the kale for 5 minutes. This breaks down the kale and makes it less stiff.
  2. Transfer the kale to a high-speed blender. Add the coconut milk, avocado, nuts, and herbs. Blend on high for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the protein powder, cocoa powder, cinnamon, salt, peppermint extract, and ice and blend until smooth. Add water if need to achieve desired consistency.

NOTE: my favorite mixture is to use ¼ C fresh mint leaves (if I’m using Chocolate Primal Fuel) and ¼ C fresh cilantro. Parsley also works well. Use whatever fresh herbs you have on hand.

After drinking this this morning, I feel ready to face the day, filled with energy that I know will sustain me until long after lunch.
